Last weekend we took a little road trip up to southern Colorado, right on the New Mexico border to visit Mesa Verde. They are these ancient cliff dwellings that you are able to tour. They are really incredible! The pictures do not do them justice. They are literally built into the side of these steep cliffs. The cliffs are right on the side of a deep canyon. The Indians used to climb the side of the rock face to get up and down into the dwellings. The weather was beautiful and we had a lot of fun hiking and touring the cliff dwellings.
The whole family. We were informed by the Park Ranger that gave the tour that we would have had a high status in the community back then because of all our kids. The fact that we are so fertile and that I have survived all four births would have made us honored by the tribe. Hah, we should have been Indians!
The dwellings are made by carved stone. They carved the stone up on top of the mesa and then carried it down to the dwelling to build. If you look at the cliff face above the dwellings, that is what they climbed down while carrying the stones!! Talk about hard work! Fortunately for us we just had to climb a 32 foot ladder to get out.

Looks like a lot of fun!
We wanted to stop by Mesa Verde on our drive back to Texas from Utah but heard that the hikes and ladders and tunnels would be difficult for the kids. Apparently not! We'll have to go some other time.
